5 Reasons You Should NOT Start a YouTube Channel

YouTube can absolutely be a game changer for your business.

I’ve not only seen it in MY business but time and time again with clients in my agency and inside of $10K on Replay. But it’s not a genie in a bottle. And there is certainly a wrong way to go about using it, especially when you’re just starting your YouTube channel.

Seriously, you could post on YouTube for years without ever really seeing results. And why is that? Well, you’re going to have to read all the way to the end to find out (promise it’s worth it though!).

#1: You don’t have a solid target audience

Like I always say — if you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one. Talking about anything and everything under the sun, even if it’s just in your corner of the world, is confusing. Not only to your audience but also to the YouTube algorithm.

The reason is, YouTube will push your content to people they think will enjoy it. So if you make dog training videos, and someone is knee-deep in a dog training rabbit hole, guess who they’re going to show? Bingo.

But if you talk about dog training, your latest book recommendations, and how the cost of living in your area has gone up (even if that has to do with your furry friend), can you guess what’s not going to happen? Uh-huh.

You have to know who you’re talking to and stay focused on that.

#2: You don’t want to put in the effort to be consistent

Look, YouTube isn’t easy. I’m not going to sit here and pretend you can get overnight success with it. You probably aren’t going to go viral and gain thousands of subscribers like you could do on Instagram.

But that’s because YouTube has higher quality, higher value, content. You’re going deeper into topics that have to do with your niche, and because of it, you build a better connection with your audience. Meaning that while subscribers may be “few,” the ROI can be great.

It’s all about providing value over being flashy.

And part of that value? Consistently showing up. If you’re willing to show up once a week or every other week, you’ll do great. And don’t overthink it — you can even just post 10-15 minute videos and see results. Just show up and be there for your audience.

You want accolades like subscribers

Again, they don’t exactly mean anything. I bring in over six figures in profit and the majority of my leads come from YouTube. But guess what? I don’t have a silver plaque. In fact, for a YouTube expert, my subscribers are lower comparatively.

Does it matter? Heck no! I’m still making money and I’m still able to show up for my audience and clients…the right way, instead of trying to build a following.

Newsflash — in terms of business, that following doesn’t mean anything if they aren’t converting.

You don’t want to give it your full attention

YouTube is long-form content. It takes a lot of time to make.

Yes, I know that making Reels can also take a lot of time, but scripting, filming, editing, and promoting YouTube videos takes way longer.

If you don’t want to create content specifically for the YouTube platform, and you’d rather just repurpose a podcast episode, don’t waste your time. You aren’t going to see the ROI you want.

The podcasting experience is different from the YouTube experience. And trying to make one fit to the other isn’t going to work well 99% of the time.

You’re waiting for things to be perfect

Nothing will ever be perfect. You don’t need the perfect camera, content titles, background, etc. to get started. You just need to, again, show the heck up.

If you look back at so many entrepreneurs we look up to or we think are experts now…they all started somewhere, no matter how imperfect it was. If you wait, you won’t do it. Because the timing will never be right.

I’ve had lipstick on my teeth, hair a mess, something random in my background that I didn’t pick up, a kid screaming in the background, the garbage truck cruising by…all while filming. And guess what? That didn’t stop people from watching.

You have to roll with it. Nothing is ever going to be perfect but that’s what makes you a human that people can connect with.
